First Post! 06/22/2011
Today's the first day of summer and in Bayfield it felt more like November, with 45 degree F rain filled winds soaking the berry fields. This is what our MOSA certified organic Patriot blueberries look like today, about a week after petal fall. Fortunately, our weather during bloom was calm and sunny, perfect for the pollenators to do their work. And work they did, for this year's fruit set looks better than last year's, which on paper could translate to a larger crop. But with the average first blueberry picking at Blue Vista being about July 25, they have a month to go to fully ripen and for Mother Nature to work her magic turning them into quarter sized spheres of antioxidants, flavor and sweetness. Let us all cross our collective fingers and hope that the rain and windstorms don't find their way to the gleaming shores of the Big Lake quite yet - not for a month or more - for more than just us humans rely upon the earth to provide. In the next post I will have a picture and a story of others that live here in the berry fields at Blue Vista Farm. Leave a Reply |
